I just read a few articles on the results of a new research study that was done on women who have had weight loss surgery and their odds of a healthy pregnancy after surgery. Here is a link to one of the more detailed articles on the results of the study and it’s findings. The results were posted in the Journal of the American Medical Association and it basically is proving the theory that when you loose weight it’s better for your health and the health of the baby.
Honestly I was surprised to see this kind of information making the news and rounds on the internet. I thought this was a foregone conclusion that when you are obese you are at a higher risk for all kinds of complications for a pregnancy. The study was focused on women who have had either the gastric banding or gastric bypass surgery and then got pregnant later on. Followed these women that got pregnant after their weight loss surgery and compared them to women that were still obese and got pregnant.
I think really to no ones surprise the women that had the weight loss surgery had much fewer complications or challenges when it came to fertility, pregnancy and the health of the baby. My question is this, did we really need another study to be done on the benefits of weight loss and the health challenges anyone faces when they are overweight? Don’t get me wrong I am glad that they proved and provided even more evidence for the benefits of weight loss especially for women that are looking to get pregnant. I guess I just read the article and it struck me as funny that they were writing about it as if it was some great revelation that would blow the lid of the joint. Oh well I guess not all news is created equal
